RECIPE FOR PANCAKES, or CREPES SUZETTE
Ingredients for 8 servings
flour, salt, sugar, milk, egg, oil (or melted butter), flavouring
Directions
- 1. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, salt and sugar.
- Make a well in the center and pour in the milk, egg and melted butter ;
- mix until smooth.
- 2. Heat a lightly oiled frying pan over medium high heat.
- 3. Pour or scoop the batter onto the pan, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake.
- 4. Brown on both sides and serve hot.
VOCABULARY
Reading this short recipe in English wasn’t very easy : each word in bold characters was a problem for us !!! We had to check in our diccionaries.
- servings (for plates) = doses (for medecines)
- to sift = to pass dry ingredients through a sieve, to free them of any lumps.
- the batter → from heavy to thin.
- to scoop water from a boat (écope)
- to scoop out = to hollow out with a spoon

We did some research on the word HOLLOW and we spoke about the movie « Sleepy Hollow », a 1999 American horror film directed by Tim Burton inspired by the 1820 short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving and starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci.

RETIREMENT HOMES
We listened about a novel by Catherine Hermary Vieille, « le roman d’Aila » :
A 78 ans, la narratrice doit entrer à la maison de retraite des Amaryllis. Mais elle ne se sent nullement vieille et cherche à se révolter dans ce monde qui l’étouffe. Peu à peu, sa vie se rétrécit et le quotidien prend une importance démesurée. Pour garder sa liberté, elle trouve refuge dans l’écriture….
We spoke about the way old people in those houses are treated like babies, and about the tragedy which comes with the end of driving a car or cycling ; we felt so sorry when we heard about the granny and her tinbox full of letters and images, all her life in a box.
In Quebec, they don’t speak about the third or the forth age, they speak about « âge d’or » ; in Spain, they use the word « jubilado » for a retired person ; in America, they speak about "senior citizens".
To enlighten the atmosphere, we tried to repeat Peter’s sentence full of h : Hazel has a hollyhock on her hat and in her hand.
