N. went to see Spielberg’s film about Lincoln and liked it a lot, both for Lincoln’s private and political life. She found it very interesting as well to hear about the 13th amendment. At his time, neither women nor black people had a right to vote.

Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
A. told us she had visited the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. Here is the text of Gettysburg’s Address, 19/11/1863, which none of us knew :
Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

We did some research about voting in English-speaking countries.
The yeas and the nays (= FOR / AGAINST) is simply a term referring to how the members of a governing body, such as a congress or parliament, voted. It indicates who votes for or against a specific proposal.

I- spoke about « The Valladolid Debate » with Jean Carmet, in 1992, which concerned the treatment of natives of the New World in the 16th century : Do Indians have a soul ?

Miscellanies

  • Next week, N- will go and see another OV film, a musical, « Les Misérables ».
  • A- spoke about her daughter, who is an Indian dance teacher for whom she sews costumes.
  • We talked about the evolution of writing boards in schools : blackboard → greenboard → whiteboard (Velleda) → Interactive Whiteboard (TBI in French).
  • After being injured, we have scars on our skin. Scars can be for physical or moral injuries.
  • A- had brought her book about false friends and false cognates and we had fun, each in turn, trying to guess the meaning of some expressions.
  • I- had brought her illustrated book about multilingual vocabulary : English, Italian, Spanish and German.

We had fun during that « rooster-donkey » morning, going off on all kinds of tangents, jumping from one topic to the next, in all directions.
To jump from pillar to post is a reference to the rapid movement of balls in tennis.
