Le webmaster du site de ressources pédagogiques libres, ecole.edulibre, a récemment déniché une version du vilain petit canard d’Andersen illustrée par la plume d’un lithographe flamand en 1893, de la mouvance "Art Nouveau".
Theodoor van HOIJTEMA (1863-1917), was famous in his country for his calendars as well as his work for the zoological Museum in Leyde until 1890.
Ten years ago, an exhibition of his Japanese-like birds was held in the Centre Ceramique in Maastricht in 2001
FOUR PICTURE-BOOKS published in the 90s
In 1891 he went to work independently and published his first picture book, How the birds came to a King, printed in The Hague with S. Lankhout and Co.
In 1893, his second picture book came out for Andersen’s tale, The Ugly Duckling.
In 1895 Owls’ Happiness ;
and in 1897 Two Cocks and Birds’ Happiness.
All these titles were published by C. M. van Gogh in Amsterdam and later reprinted by publisher AG Schoonderbeek in Laren.
The English book can be found on line here
The text is a shortenend version of 1913 wikisource.
An earlier translation (1872) can be found here.
