Painting the new world in watercolours in 1585

In 1585 the Englishman John White, governor of one of the very first North American colonies, made a series of exquisite watercolour sketches of the native Algonkin people alongside whom the settlers would try to live.

Benjamin Breen explores the significance of the sketches and their link to the mystery of what became known as the “Lost Colony”.

Pane adusta et ruinam minante arbore, novum suscitant ignem, quem flagnare sinunt donec arbor sponte cadat. Adustis deinde arboris sastigio et ramis, ut trucus iustam longitudinem retineat, tignis transversis supra surcas positis imponunt, ea altitudine ut commode laborare possint, tunc cortice conchis quibusdam adempto, interiorem truci partem pro cymba inferiore parte servant, in altem parteignem secundum truci longitudinem struunt, praeterquam extremis, quod satis adustum illis videtur, restincto igne conchis scabunt, et novo suscitato igne denuo adurunt, atque it a deinceps pergunt, subonde vrentes et scabentes, donec cymba necessarium aluem nacta sit. Sic Domini spiritus rudibus hominibus suggerit rationem, qua res in suum usum necessarias conficere queant.

One can admire in Virginia the way of building boats from trees without iron instruments...
